GTA 6 on PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X|S

Last updated: October 3, 2026

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. If you own one of these consoles, you do not need to compare processors or graphics cards. The game is built for the hardware you already have. What matters instead is storage space, internet access, a few account details and knowing how pre-loading and physical editions work. This guide covers everything console players should prepare.

Supported Consoles

  • PlayStation 5 (disc and digital models).
  • Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

Rockstar has not announced versions for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo systems or mobile. If you own an older console, you would need to upgrade. Whether a PS5 Pro version has any special enhancements has not been confirmed in the sources we reviewed, so we do not claim any.

Storage Space

The final install size has not been published in the material we checked. Rockstar’s previous major game on PC used about 150 GB, and large open-world games on console frequently need over 100 GB. To be safe, free at least 150 GB on your console’s internal storage before the pre-load begins and leave extra room for updates. On Xbox Series X|S, remember that you may use expansion storage for some content and the internal SSD for others, depending on the platform’s rules. On PS5, you can use an M.2 SSD for PS5 games if you install a compatible drive. Check your console’s manual for compatibility.

Digital vs Physical

According to published reports of Rockstar’s announcement, physical copies of GTA 6 will contain a download code rather than a game disc, and the code can be redeemed from November 12, 2026. Digital pre-orders can also pre-load from that date. Both routes need an internet connection and storage for a large download. If your connection is slow or has a monthly data cap, consider downloading at a friend’s house or using a wired connection to speed things up.

Internet and Accounts

  • Use a wired connection if possible, since it is faster and more stable than Wi-Fi.
  • Check your data cap with your provider.
  • Sign in to your PlayStation Network or Xbox account before launch and confirm payment details.
  • Install the latest system update.

Performance Expectations

Rockstar has not publicly committed to a resolution or frame rate target in the sources we reviewed. Console versions of big open-world games often offer a choice between a quality mode and a performance mode, but we cannot say whether GTA 6 will. We will update this page when official information appears or when independent technical analyses are published after launch.

Accessories and Setup

You do not need special accessories. A good television or monitor with a modern HDMI connection and a comfortable controller are enough. If you have a display that supports high refresh rates, check whether the game supports them once details are published. Headphones are helpful for the game’s soundtrack and city ambience.

Play Offline?

Rockstar described GTA 6 as a single-player experience at launch, but you still need to be online to download the files and may need to be online for updates and account verification. Check the store page for details.

PC and Other Platforms

There is no PC version announced. Learn more in our PC release guide and check the estimated PC requirements if you plan to upgrade a computer later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need PlayStation Plus or Xbox online? Single-player games usually do not require a subscription, but some online features do. Check the store listing.

Can I play GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One? No version for those consoles has been announced.

Can I move the game to an external drive? Platform rules vary, so check your console’s guidance.

Console Checklist Before November 12

  1. Free at least 150 GB of storage, then add a margin.
  2. Install the newest system update.
  3. Test download speed and, if needed, connect by cable.
  4. Check your account’s payment details and parental controls.
  5. Decide between digital and physical, remembering that physical copies are download codes according to reports.
  6. Back up saves for other games so you can delete them if space runs short.

Common Problems and Fixes

If a large download stalls, restart the console and the router, then resume. If you see an error about insufficient space, delete or archive other titles; on many consoles you can re-download them later at no cost. If the code from a physical copy does not redeem, check that you are signed in to the right regional account and contact the retailer or platform support, not unknown websites. Take care with second-hand codes, which may already be used.

Family and Parental Controls

GTA 6 is a mature-rated game. Parents can use PlayStation Family Management or Xbox Family Settings to restrict purchases and set age limits. Check the official age rating on the store page for your country before buying.
